Image Analysis in R: Using the Terra Packag... (Pecora 2022)

Instructor: Dr. Aaron Maxwell, West Virginia University
* Participants can bring their own laptop/tablet
This workshop will investigate the R language and open-source data science environment for working with imagery and other raster-based geospatial data. Traditionally, geospatial raster data have been read in, analyzed, and manipulated using the raster package. The terra package is replacing the raster package and offers a faster and more memory efficient means to handle raster grids. You will explore common raster preprocessing routines and apply a spatial predictive model to classify all cells within a raster extent. You will also be introduced to resources to learn more about raster-based spatial analysis in R.

Dr. Aaron Maxwell
Aaron Maxwell is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Geology and Geography at West Virginia University. He teaches geospatial science courses for both undergraduate and graduate students. He is also the director of West Virginia View, a consortium of public, private, and non-profit remote sensing organizations in West Virginia, and a faculty director of the West Virginia GIS Technical Center. Prior to coming to West Virginia University, he was an Assistant Professor at Alderson Broaddus University. Prior to teaching, he worked as a Remote Sensing Analyst at the Natural Resource Analysis Center (NRAC) at West Virginia University. He is a graduate of Alderson Broaddus where he received bachelor degrees in Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Science. He then attended West Virginia University where he earned a master degree in Geology followed by a PhD in Geology. The primary objectives of his work are to investigate computational methods to extract useful information from geospatial data to make informed decisions and to train students to be effective and thoughtful geospatial scientists and professionals. His research interests include spatial predictive modeling, machine learning and deep learning applications in the geospatial sciences, forest and wetland mapping and monitoring, accuracy assessment best practices, and geomorphic mapping and monitoring.
