For submitters, please note:
PE&RS is a double-blind peer-review journal. The manuscript submitted for peer-review should not include any information explicitly or implicitly reflect the authors’ identity.
Therefore, please do not include the authors’ name and institutions in the manuscript. The acknowledgement section should not be included, either.
Any statements in the manuscript, such as “based on our previous work [citation]”, should be rephrased not to reflect the authors’ identify. When the paper is accepted, the authors will be asked to insert the acknowledgement back in the final version of the paper.

What documentation should accompany the peer-review manuscript submission?
All submissions must also include a separate cover letter. Please download the
Sample Cover Letter
and modify with your details.
The manuscript must be original work and not currently being considered for publication in any other journal. Finally, the authors must pay for any page charges for manuscripts longer than nine journal pages.
Are PE&RS manuscripts open-access?
PE&RS allows open-access manuscripts. The open-access fee is waived for primary authors from subscribing institutions. Additionally, primary authors who are Individual Members of ASPRS will be able to publish one open-access article per year at no cost and will receive a 50% discount on open-access fees for additional articles.

What language should peer-review manuscripts be submitted in?
All manuscripts must be submitted in U.S. English. Authors whose first language is not English must have their manuscripts reviewed by an English-speaking colleague or editor to refine use of the English language (vocabulary, grammar, syntax). At the discretion of the Editor, manuscripts may be returned for English language issues before they are sent for review.
What are the review procedures?
Manuscripts are peer-reviewed and refereed by a panel of experts selected by the Associate Editor assigned by the Editor in Charge. A double-blind review procedure is used. The identities and affiliations of authors are not provided to reviewers nor are reviewers’ names disclosed to authors.
Our goal is to provide authors with completed reviews within a median of 60 days of receipt of a manuscript by the Editor. The time from submission to final decision (acceptance or rejection) depends on various factors, including the time the authors take to respond to the review comments. In general, we aim to complete this process with a median of 120 days.
Details on PE&RS Manuscript Review Procedures can be found here.
Manuscripts submitted for peer-review must be formatted as outlined below. Manuscripts that do not conform to these requirements will be returned for format revisions before they are sent for review.
- Single column
- Font type and size: 11-point Arial
- Margins: 1 inch on all sides (A4 or US letter size)
- Spacing: Double
- Include line numbers
- Include page numbers
- Do not include author names
- Sections are enumerated and boldface font
- Free page count: 9 pages in publication format
- Maximum 300-word abstract
- Citations and References: authors are encouraged to organize their citations following the final format (see further below, “For the final manuscript”), however strict formatting is not required at the peer-review stage.
Because PE&RS still publish in physical copies, manuscripts exceeding a length of 9 pages (14 pages for review/tutorial papers) in the publisher-formatted version are required to pay the page charges of $150/page before publication.
Please note: PE&RS is a double-blind peer-review journal. The manuscript submitted for peer-review should not include any information explicitly or implicitly reflecting the authors’ identity.
Therefore, please do not include the authors’ name and institutions in the manuscript. The acknowledgement section should not be included, either.
Once the paper is accepted, the authors can insert the acknowledgement back in the final version of the paper.
Any statements in the manuscript, such as “based on our previous work [citation]”, should be rephrased not to reflect the authors’ identity.
For the final manuscript:
- Include a 75-word author bio for each author
- Include acknowledgements
- Citations and References: the authors are encouraged to organize their citation following the final format (see instruction further below “For the final manuscript”), however a strict formatting is not required at the peer-review stage.
A more detailed formatting instructions can be found
here.
Use of AI tools in preparation of the manuscript
In the event that any AI-based tools, e.g., large language models (e.g. ChatGPT etc.), generative models, are used to prepare the manuscripts, the authors must provide a statement under a section called “Declaration of generative AI and AI-assisted technologies in the manuscript preparation” about how these tools are used in this manuscript preparation process. This section should be placed after main text of this manuscript, but before the reference section.
It should be noted that the authors are prohibited to use any AI-generated content as part of the intellectual merits, but can only use it for improving the readability of the manuscript, and must be under human oversight and control. AI cannot serve as authors or co-authors. Since AI may hallucinate contents that are incorrect, authors who use AI tools to assist the manuscript preparation should be fully responsible for any incorrect content.
Does PE&RS allow authors to submit author bios with their manuscript?
Yes. Each manuscript author is allowed to have a 75-word bio printed in the manuscript.
How do I upgrade my published conference paper to be submitted to PE&RS
Typically for published conference papers to be upgraded and submitted to PE&RS, in addition to complying with the journal formatting requirement, the authors should make roughly about 30%-50% of content changes. These changes can be:
- A more complete and detailed mathematical formulation of the methodology
- A more extensive experiments with deeper analysis, or experiments showcasing extended and enabling applications
- An improved version of the method or study, with more experiment sites or sites with larger geographical region to demonstrate scalability
