In this book readers will find the recollections of individuals whose collective, professional contributions represent the foundation for the discipline of
national reconnaissance. On 18 August 2000 the Director of the National Reconnaissance Office (DNRO), Keith R. Hall,
selected 46 pioneers who had made significant and lasting contributions to the discipline over the previous 40 years. The recollections in this book are
stories that look beyond historical events associated with a particular time — the developing days of national reconnaissance.
With the Cold War, the founders and pioneers were confronting threats and uncertainties that their generation was finding frightful and initially
baffling.
The founders of national reconnaissance were a small group of national-level advisors who provided the technical expertise that shaped the emerging
discipline of national reconnaissance in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The pioneers, well-respected experts in their fields, made contributions
through their front-line work such as invention of a reconnaissance camera, the development of instant photography, contributions of research instrumental in
the development of the U.S. hydrogen bomb and research that led to the discovery of nuclear magnetic resonance imaging. It
was these pioneers that built the U.S. national reconnaissance capability.
According to Robert A. McDonald, editor, “When you read these accounts and reflect on their content, you will find that they are insightful stories about the theory,
doctrine, and practice of national reconnaissance. You will find information about the lives of these individuals who were
committed to a mission and brought the nation extraordinary engineering solutions to the complex challenges of national reconnaissance.”
It was the national security threat of the Cold War that moved this generation into action, but it was their knowledge of science, technology, and engineering that
provided the means to find answers. The pioneers of national reconnaissance, by the example of their accomplishments,
offer students of national reconnaissance and future pioneers insights that should inspire further breakthroughs.
Forwords by Peter B. Teets, Director, National Reconnaissance Office and Keith R. Hall,
